Established in 1964, the Shipbuilding Technology Research Institute (STRI) of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) is a unique research and development organization concerned with shipbuilding technology. Research fields are covered with construction technology for ship and offshore structures, CNC cutting machine, CNC frame bender and other mechan-electrical products; techniques and equipment for welding, cutting, anti-corrosion, metal surface treatment & testing; the application and testing of non-metal materials; the development of applied software system, network engineering, software development; and project supervision of the steel structures.
　　Subordinate to Institute, Machinery Automation Department (MAD) is an entity with research, development and trade in one. It consists of marketing, research and manufacture sections, equipped with advanced CAD center, modernized office facilities, workshops and labs with 1800m2. The means of mechan-electrical processing, testing and commission are effective and complete.
　　There is a technical personnel of researchers, senior engineers, engineers and skilled workers. They have accumulated rich experience in design and development of CNC equipment, automatic processing line and machan-electrical equipment.
　　 The MAD has successfully developed one of the Shanghai significant projects-automatic cage pipe-cutting machine for automobile producing, CNC frame bender and panel line for shipyards, trolley production line, Rubbish Compression Relay Station, CNC Flame/plasma cutting machine, stud welder and a large number of mechan-electrical products. Among them, CNC plasma cutting machine and CNC frame bender were believed one of Shanghai High and New technology projects. The CNC plasma-cutting machine was awarded with "certificate of national new product" by five ministries of Science and Technology Ministry and etc in 1999.
